Last academic year, Bristol Labour Students co-hosted a ‘political speed-dating‘ event with the Bristol University Conservative Association.

If I ever needed reminding of what a repressed and socially awkward bunch us Brits are, then this was it. So, when I saw a website advertising speeding dating, or slow dating as it is called, I thought I would sign up for it. And what a welcome change it would be to meet people face to face without the pain of online dating with the dodgy pictures and agonising profiles to write. Turns out it was the right venue, it was just that people were not talking, just standing around looking decidedly glum.

The mood was far from jovial; to be honest it was more like being at a wake. Unperturbed, I walked over to the event organiser, a smiley women with a clipboard and stickers. She welcomed me to the event and gave me a sticker with my name on it. There was a bit of time before the speed dating started so I headed to the bar, where there were other people getting their much-needed drinks before the event kicked off.

Standing at the bar, I was struck again by how quiet it was. A few people chatted in hushed tones, others stood on their own staring at the floor. There were two women standing nearby and so I got chatting to them.
