Since servers often require large bandwidths for networking and storage, an extension to the PCI standard PCI-X was created to fill this need.
Today, most servers will use PCI Express for their high-bandwidth applications.
Which of these throughput speeds would you expect to see on a single direction of a PCI Express lane?
The Communications and Networking Riser was designed as a low-speed interface for network connections or modems.
By using the CNR, you can avoid using a full PCI slot for these common bus and expansion slots devices.
It's unusual to find a CNR slot on most modern motherboards because these features have become integrated onto the motherboard itself.
And all of these separate, independent pathways are there.
You also have the option on these motherboards to be able to expand the capabilities.
There are expansion slots built right into the motherboard.
So if you wanted to add bus and expansion slots interfaces, some additional video options, you can do that right with the existing hardware that you own in that motherboard.
Sometimes these are a lot of tiny little roads, these tiny little traces.
And as we see in older motherboards, the wider the bus gave us more bandwidth.
That refers to how much data is passing by every second or every time we have a clock cycle inside of that computer.
And you can see that the expansion bus itself, it has its own clock.
If we were to look at the specifications of a computer, we normally will see a clock speed associated with the speed of that PC.
But there are a lot of different speeds that are occurring on that motherboard.
The expansion bus itself has its own clock.
If it is 1 megahertz, that is one million cycles per second.
A hertz being one cycle per second, therefore a megahertz is a million cycles per second.
And obviously, a gigahertz is 1,000 megahertz.

Something like DDR3 transfers data at 64 times the rate of the memory clock.
That provides a lot of efficiencies.

You plug in whatever expansion you would like.
You power it back on.
And now, you have additional capabilities available, all by adding different connectors into those slots.
PCI stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect.
It was created in 1994.
The highest will be 533 megabytes per second.
A 32-bit PCI bus is one where we have expansion slots.
We would plug in our adapter bus and expansion slots />If this was a 64-bit PCI connection, it has twice as many connections going between a much larger expansion slot and also connecting back to the Southbridge.
It has all these little keys on it as well.
Notice that each slot is very different looking.
You can see this card has a notch at the 3.
And if either of those voltages are available on your motherboard, this particular card will take advantage of them.
The 64-bit expansion card, much longer you can see.
This is another adapter card that will work in both 3.
As we became more mobile, we needed a way to take the same functionality as PCI and shrink it down for our mobile devices.
So a new standard was created called mini PCI.
This had the same type of signaling, the same type of capabilities as PCI, but it put it into a very, very small form factor that worked perfectly for laptops.
So we could add a Wi-Fi card, a mobile broadband card, and put it right into the laptop itself, but using a same standard as something that we were very comfortable with, with the PCI format.
Unfortunately, when you plug these into the laptops, they are inside under the covers of the laptop.
So unlike a where you could plug into an interface on a PCI adapter card, these particular adapter cards are inside of your laptop.

One of the things we found with PCI is as the years went on, it became much harder to get higher throughputs through those particular legacy interfaces.
So we created an update to the PCI called the PCI-X.
That stands for PCI eXtended.
We really created this for servers that needed a lot of throughput.
And they really got a lot of bandwidth out of this update.
They were able to get four times the clock speed.
It had a lot of abilities to plug in gigabyte ethernet cards or high-speed storage.
And you can see that the capacity, the throughput of these devices, went up to 1,064 megabytes per second.
Now, keep in mind this PCI-X does not stand for PCI Express.
PCI-X stands for PCI eXtended, which is simply a newer version, an updated version of the PCI standard.
You will bus and expansion slots see this abbreviated as PCIe with that lowercase e.
This is not the PCI-X for the abbreviation.
PCI Express is PCIe.
PCI Express also is not that traditional 32 or 64-bit wide bus.
We call these lanes.
In the older PCI style, if you plugged in a slower card, the entire bus had to slow down to that speed.
And they all have different sizes as well.
So a Express by 1 slot is going to have a connection up to the Northbridge.
So this is a full duplex communication, going back and forth to that Northbridge.
So a by 4 slot is going to have four of those full duplex lanes between the interface card and the Northbridge.
If we wanted to compare the different speeds between those different versions, you can see that version 1.
When we got to PCI Express version 2.
And there is currently under way work for version 4.
This motherboard also has some of the legacy PCI connectors.
Those are relatively short, very small connections.
If you were to look at the adapter cards for that, they match this.
That serial communication really allows you to very efficiently transfer information between the adapter card and the motherboard.
Another legacy interface you might run into is the CNR.
That stands for Communications and Networking Riser.
This was created just so we could add additional network cards or additional modems into our computers.
This is a very, very small interface.
Well these days of course, motherboards have almost everything included on them.
Another legacy slot you might run into is the AGP slot.
This stands for Accelerated Graphics Port.
We almost always call it AGP.
Before we had PCI Express, we needed some way to increase the throughput for our video cards.
There was a lot of gaming, a lot of high-end graphics that was required.
And AGP was built just for that.
So we were always able to plug in and get some additional video out of these AGP slots.
But now that PCI Express is around, we have much more bandwidth available.
Almost all of the new video cards that we see are using PCI Express as its slot.
Therefore, we needed more connectors bus and expansion slots the motherboard.
Many of these cards also have these notches on them that allow you to lock that particular card into a section of the motherboard.

These are communication paths that go between all of these different components.

And the expansion slots also give us a way to communicate back to CPU and memory and other components on the motherboard.
When you hear someone talk about how much information you can put through one of these expansion buses, you may hear them talk about the width of the expansion bus.
But the width effectively means how much traffic we can push through a connection.
We refer to this as the clock speed of the bus.
Every bus has its own clock.
We measure the speed as the number of cycles that we can perform in a single second.
The cycle is called a hertz.
If we can perform one million cycles in a second, we call that a megahertz, or one MHz, if we wanted to abbreviate it.
If you want to do 1,000 of those megahertz, it would be a gigahertz.
You would think then that one clock cycle would equal one transfer of information.
But there are some techniques that we can use to transfer more than one piece of information on a single clock cycle.
Take for example DDR3 SDRAM.
This is the memory that we would have inside of our computer.
It can transfer 64 times the amount of the memory clock speed.
So although the clock on the memory is going at a certain rate, we can increase the amount of data transfer, through a number of different techniques, to go 64 times what that clock speed might actually be.
And although a number of these components are now collapsed into single chips, and we may have different components plugging into different parts of the motherboard, this is a very good overview that shows you what all of the different components might be.
Some of these we might recognize, like the CPU and the memory.
You can see that this is a motherboard that supports PCI adapter slots.
But they may be connected to other parts of the motherboard chipsets.

They are different sizes and different types of connections you would use.
And all we have to do is push down on this card very gently.
And it will very easily slide into the slot.

We begin to run out of space on the motherboard.
If we look closer at the 32-bit PCI slots and the 64-bit PCI slots, you can see there is a little bit of a difference between them.
And these little notches that are built into the slots are designed to fit cards that will support a certain type of power requirement.
If we look at the 32-bit expansion card, you can see there are these notches at the bottom that designate how much power this particular card can use.
This is an adapter card for a modem.
And this modem can support both a 3.
So it depends on the type of motherboards you have and what type of power it supports.
In this particular case, this card will support either one of those bus and expansion slots />There are notches for 3.
And you have bus and expansion slots additional card connections on the back of this particular ethernet card.
This is the PCI eXtended.
It was based on the conventional PCI, but it was designed for servers.
Servers need a lot of throughput.
We had four times the clock speed, up to 1,064 megabytes per second of throughput.
And just like the conventional PCI, the PCI-X is also a parallel communication.
And although there is an X in PCI-X, this is not just click for source PCI Express.
This is a PCI eXtended.
Those are two very different kinds of standards, and you want to make sure you do not confuse the two.
And you can see the abbreviation for PCI Express is PCIe.
And it goes much faster than these older expansion types.
Instead of communicating over parallel connections, PCI Express communicates serially, which means it sends a single bit at a time from one side to the other.
There is the one, two, four, eight, 16, or 32 full-duplex lanes.
That means we have communication going back and forth in both directions bus and expansion slots />In the case of the PCI Express x1 slot, you can see there is communication and quarter slots on that lane one direction, and one lane the other direction.
We have a very simplified way of communicating.
And we can still get very high throughputs.
And there are different flavors and different versions of PCI Express.
If we look at the per-lane throughput in each direction, the version one of PCI Express allowed us 250 megabytes per second per lane.
So you can see these numbers are much higher than we ever got with a PCI or a PCI eXtended architecture.
If we look at our motherboards, we can easily find those PCI Express slots.
And you can see that there are different sizes of slots available.
And down here is a x4 slot.
So you will see that the larger slot allows us to have faster and faster communication lanes.
Instead you have the same type of communication as PCI Express, but you have a much smaller slot to connect to.
This is the Mini PCI and the PCI Express mini card.
So we might want to plug-in a Wi-Fi adapter, maybe a mobile broadband connection, and we want to plug it into a standardized bus type on these mobile connections.
We usually are opening up the laptop and plugging it into the laptop on the inside.
There might be a port on the outside of the laptop that gives us just enough access.
Or we may have to take off the entire back of the laptop just to install these cards on the inside.
I have a laptop that allows me to take off a small panel on the back.
And that gives me access to both the memory slot that you can see here on the right and the mini PCI Express connection.
This happens to be for a wireless connection.
You can see there is connectors here for the antenna bus and expansion slots into this main connection.
And I can easily move things in and out of this mini PCI connection by simply removing the card and putting something else in its place.
